Abstract

A collection policy (or a collection development policy) is a document that archival institutions must have to allow them to build their collections legitimately and consistently. Digital archives often lack sustainable financial and systematic supports. Thus, it is especially important for digital archives to have a policy for consistent collection activities. Digital archives have a different set of characteristics from physical records, and these characteristics should be considered in a collection policy. This study was initiated to create such a policy for the No Gun Ri Digital Archive. It reviewed existing literature for collection policies in archives and digital archives. Moreover, it examined several cases of digital archives and their policies to identify the necessary elements as well as the legal and procedural coverages for digital content and services. Furthermore, it studied the unique characteristics of the No Gun Ri incident and the No Gun Ri Digital Archive. Based on such investigation, a collection policy for the No Gun Ri Digital Archive was suggested. It is believed that suggesting a practical collection policy will provide a useful precedent for future digital archive projects.

Abstract

As the amount of digital collections has been increasing, a new approach is needed to improve access to records. Interactive visualization allows users to more easily browse and navigate across large collections. Cultural heritage institutions in the United States, United Kingdom, and Australia introduced interactive visualization techniques to diversify ways by which to access archival records. This study aims to propose a method for applying interactive visualization to archival collections. It began with an analysis of interactive visualization cases in overseas cultural heritage institutions. Based on the analysis, a visualization of the collections held by the National Archives of Korea using various interactive visualization techniques was suggested.

Abstract

For a long time, popular songs have been our source of happiness. They go along with the flow of the generation, allowing them to acquire a significant meaning. Popular songs thus reflect the contemporary society. However, in the study of popular song archives, there has been an interest only in the information of the songs sung by a singer, the type of songs, and the type of singers. Thus, existing popular song archives were not able to reflect the characteristics of the society of the generation when the songs were popular. Therefore, this paper searched for ways by which to archive not only popular songs but also the characteristics of the society during the time when these songs were famous, and suggested a story collection through the methods. These stories reflect the lives of the people and the characteristics of the society during the periods when the songs were popular. Furthermore, these stories go beyond popular songs, making it possible for us to look dimensionally on the society we are affiliated in.

Abstract

This study suggested the necessity of the management of R & D management records produced from government-supported science research institutes (the so-called “gwagichulyeon”) and of a record management manual (item). As such, it gathered rules with regard to record management, conducted a survey, and interviewed general R & D managers. As a result of the research, the ratio of the arrangement of R & D managers to R & D management departments is 100%; however, the ratio of the arrangement of record managers is 33.3%-50%, and the ratio of the arrangement of record management departments is 23.1%, which was poor. The enactment ratio of record management rules is 26.4%, and 73.7% of institutes has managed their records under the provision only of document management rules or only of office management rules. R & D management records has been collected according to an institute’s capability without a prescribed collection scope, and the conditions with regard to the omission, damage, and loss of records were poor. There are institutes that did not comprehend the production status of R & D management records. Thus, as a response, this study suggested a record management manual (item) established for the arrangement duties of record managers and record management departments as well as for notifications on the status of R & D management records. In addition, this study produced a standardized collection scope and described how to manage R & D management records.

Abstract

This study suggested a digital curation framework for supporting the digital policy of institutes that collect memory. As such, it conducted a literature review and an analysis of digital curation models, as well as a focus-group interview of historians and graduate students majoring in historical studies. In this study, digital curation framework refers to an abstract model for supporting policy development and the planning for a high-level view of the archival information service. This implications of this framework are as follows: (1) to emphasize the data life cycle and connection between stages and actions; (2) to make an infra-schema for understanding institutes that create, arrange, or store specific data as the same history contents have to be provided by different institutes and as there are differences in the data’s value; (3) to check the present conditions of information services and their systems; (4) to consider the practical applications of contents that have been collected and stored; and (5) to converge all data in one system through the framework and activate diverse works in the context of the framework.
